Law firms and individuals with a strong intellectual property (IP) practice might find IP STARS an excellent legal directory to be part of.
IPS is published by Euromoney Institutional Investor. Other notable titles from this publisher include the legal directory IFLR 1000. IPS is a highly-specialised guide to IP firms and practitioners.
IP STARS began in 1996 and covers more than 80 jurisdictions. The directory identifies and analyses the leading IP lawyers and firms based on more than 1,000 interviews and surveys with clients and peers. Firm research starts in September.
The IPS methodology is based on a weighted review of information from firms, market feedback and other available information. The research team will analyse your questionnaire, gather market feedback from competitors and other market sources, to assess the firm and its ranking. The key aspects that IPS evaluates are: sectors covered, size of workload and level of sophistication, changes within the firm, and client feedback.
IPS uses a either a ‘Tier’ or a ‘Recommended’ system to highlight their market position for that practice area, after considering all the attributes they assess. Tier 1 is the highest ranking, but firms in Tiers 1 and 2, or those ranked as ‘Highly Recommended’, are the top-tier firms. Typically, top-tier firms possess an outstanding reputation and track record in their jurisdiction.
IPS requires only one submission for IP awards, IP STARS individuals, IP STARS firm rankings and Women in IP.
They provide an electronic submission form which can be obtained by registering with them. Firm rankings are first published in Managing Intellectual Property magazine (online and in print) between February and April. Then after the rankings are published in other publications and distributed at events and among in-house counsel (actual readership figures unknown!).
