Legal Directories. Be selective.

How many legal directories are there? I counted 11 yesterday but there are probably more.

There is actually no reason why a firm should attempt to participate in ALL the directories out there.


Think of what you are trying to achieve as a firm. Do you want to enter a new market? Do you want to raise your firm’s profile in a specific practice area?

Where are your potential clients? Choose a ranking that is popular in the country where you are trying to grow in.

Speak to your contacts in the sector or in the country where you want to grow and find out which directories they use if any. That way you can shortlist the ones that are most relevant to you.

Even if you are a full-service law firm don’t stretch yourself by trying to be ranked in all the practice areas. Choose one/two areas and gradually expand your presence in the directories.

My view is that legal directories work and are useful tools to raise brand awareness but is not a one-size-fits-all situation. Each firm is different, and as such, you should be selective and strategic in planning your marketing activity.
